The 1st of August is a day on which many amazing things have happened. In 1831 London Bridge opened to traffic for the first time, in 1941 the first Jeep was produced in 2011 Niel Cope sat at his kitchen table, ready to start his first day as the MD of People Matters.
He had a pot full of coffee, no clients, five kids and a large mortgage. He also had some serious doubts; it didn’t really make sense, did it? Gamble a perfectly respectable, and guaranteed income in favour of goodness knows what.
Seven years later he’s still sitting at the kitchen table, but only because he’s taken a few days off work. The team at People Matters, which now numbers four, are holding down the fort in their office space just outside of Bury town centre.
There are now over 50 retained clients, not including those they do regular consultancy work for. These clients range from relatively small employers, to companies employing over 400 individuals. One client has recently won an award for their company culture; a culture which the team at People Matters helped them envision and develop.
Over the years People Matters have won various awards, including a Gold standard from Investors in People, as well as being the best loved HR company in the UK for two years running.
It would seem the gamble paid off.
Today, People Matters offers the same services they always have done, and despite their increasing size are proud to offer the personal touch when it comes to HR.
Niel said, “Whilst there may well be a market for the call-centre firms who offer HR and employment law advice, many businesses need something tailored to their individual needs. Business owners want to pick up the phone and speak to the same person each time, who understands their unique position and the issues they face. We will always offer that service, along with transparent prices and no tied in contracts.”
It’s clear that many things have changed with People Matters over the years, but the HR industry has seen its own changes, too. It has not escaped the introduction of cloud-based systems, and one of the many advantages People Matters has over its competitors, is their willingness to embrace these changes.
They are currently the number 1 seller of BreatheHR, a cloud-based HR and payroll system, in the north. In fact, this software is offered as standard with all the packages People Matters provide to their clients because they know the benefits it can provide to every business, regardless of size.
So, Happy Birthday to everyone at People Matters, and well done for everything you’ve achieved to date. Here’s to the next 7 years, and beyond.
