Niel Cope, People Matters’ Managing Director, works with Company Boards, Chief Executives and Managing Directors on a daily basis and oversees all work carried out by the HR Consultants and Associates. He remains in contact with all People Matters’ clients.

Eventura

EVENTURA is a complete technology service provider based in Bolton, Greater Manchester, and which has been undergoing change and growth.

People Matters began working with them by undertaking all their Human Resources Management. Niel’s relationship with Chief Executive Chris Houghton developed further and they began looking at a longer term strategy for the organisation.

Chris’s ambition is to grow the company and we were eager to help. It was decided that our services could complement Eventura’s move to a new, purpose-designed building in the Summer of 2015 in order to re-structure and develop the business.

Two key drivers were introduced to give it a structure and standard: to obtain Investor in People Accreditation at a high level, and to adopt ITIL (Information Technology Infrastructure Library) methodology and structure.

Niel coached Chris and the Directors and a clear strategy was set out for the company, offering a road-map for the future. We re-structured the company, creating new roles, a structure to meet future demand and to develop extra client support, all in accordance with ITIL.

Additional development to support the strategy was identified and facilitated by People Matters’ Associates, including Customer Service and Project Management.

Niel obtained funding from Growth Accelerator to develop the leadership and management capabilities of the organisation and brought in Coach and Mentor John Doyle to work alongside him to develop board members and help drive the strategy forward.

In April, 2015, Eventura was assessed against Investor in People and the steps Niel had put in place, and the company was awarded the Silver Standard at the first attempt – with a recommendation that they should be assessed again to achieve Gold Standard next year after the move.

Freedom Logistics

FREEDOM LOGISTICS is an internationally renowned freight forwarding company based in Stockport, Greater Manchester.

Niel began working with them in 2012, initially to provide outsourced HR support. To support the Directors’ ambitions, a bespoke HR system was created which included pay scales, pay and reward and development allowances.

In 2015, Freedom acquired another company with offices in London and Leeds. Niel worked closely with the Directors to re-structure the new company and manage a change process to integrate the two companies into the positive culture on which Freedom thrives.

This was achieved by being open and by holding honest, two-way conversations. We extended the company’s positive reward and recognition process, and gave them a company structure, transparency, engagement and HR processes. These had all been in place at Freedom since Niel developed them in 2012, but new staff had never seen them before.

To underpin these changes and develop the culture, Niel created a Leadership Development Programme for the entire new management team across all sites, which he is delivering.

Bolton Hospice

BOLTON HOSPICE Bolton Hospice provides specialist care and support for people with life-limiting illnesses and their families and has been working with People Matters since 2015.

We have reviewed and re-written their HR policies, procedures, handbooks and guidance. We have also trained all levels of management in the use of these new systems, and we provide specialist external HR support to their internal HR function.

Rowe Hankins

ROWE HANKINS is an international sales lead engineering company based in the North-west. The Managing Director invited Niel to discuss the future of the organisation and how People Matters could help.

Niel and Mike Hankins agreed that the project would be managed in stages. Firstly, Niel and Associate John Doyle spent two days in the organisation, speaking to the board as a group and then individually. They then spoke to managers individually, and undertook focus groups with a cross-section of staff.

The results were evaluated and a report written highlighting potential challenges and opportunities and outlining a plan to move the company forward.

Niel then managed a re-structure of the organisation, supported by HR Consultant Helen Brown, which included consultations with affected departments and people. Following completion of the re-structure, John began to coach the Senior Managers, helping to develop them as people and in their strategic awareness.

People Matters were then engaged by the Board as outsourced HR providers. Niel spent time with the Managing Director and wrote a 12-month HR plan to take the company forward. This included a full review and development of HR policies, processes and systems which both our Resources Director Yvonne Cope and HR Consultant Jo Preece worked on.

The company’s vision, mission and strategy were reviewed and a competency framework to reflect the company’s values was written by Niel. Jo re-wrote all the job descriptions in conjunction with the Line Managers to reflect new roles and the competences were included.

Niel designed a bespoke Performance Appraisal system incorporating feedback on previous performance rating of performances against competences, and objective setting to develop the individual and achieve the organisational objectives.

To improve communication, an Employee Engagement group, made up of a cross-section of staff representing each department, was brought together. This is now facilitated by Niel and collates the views of staff on changes and developments within the organisation as well as acting as a conduit for staff communications.

The Managing Director now holds full briefings in addition to his walkabout conversations, and brings people into the loop about issues highlighted when he meets clients and prospective clients around the world.

Niel is now hosting a Leadership Development programme to complement the coaching and has implemented additional staff training and development.
